Corrupted Emule File Recovery

Some of my downloads went missing and I got some messages in my emule log saying that my files are corrupt. I went on to research for a solution. What I found is summarised in this article.

Problem:
Corrupted file, missing downloads.
Sample error message: Error: ###.part.met () is corrupt, unable to load file

Causes:

  • Emule crash
  • Not enough disk space (I guess, don’t know if it is true)
  • Bad servers/sources sending corrupted data (Use PEER GUARDIAN -3rd party software to reduce this)

Possible Prevention Methods:

  • PEER GUARDIAN, reduces corrupt data sent from bad sources
  • Make a separate list downloads along with file name and ed2k link to remember lost and forgotten files

Possible Solutions:

  1. Check the downloads.txt and downloads.bak file to find the part which the file is corrupted
    1. If you have a large list, you might want to CTRL+F to search for the file number
    • Both files are inside your “eMule Downloads” directory
    • Open .bak with notepad or other text editor
    • .bak file is backup of the .txt file
  2. If you CAN find the part inside downloads.txt, it means you know what file you lost.
    1. Look at the ed2k link at the side you should be able to make out what file name it is.
    2. You might be able to recover the file - SEE BELOW [possible recovery] section
  3. If you CANNOT find the part inside downloads.txt, go to your TEMP directory which contains incomplete files of your emule
    • Move on to [possible recovery] section

POSSIBLE RECOVERY

    1. Look for the corrupted part’s ###.part.met and ###.part.met.bak files
    2. If these files are not 0 KB in size, you can find your file name of the corrupted file by opening it with a text editor such as notepad
    1. If these files are 0 KB in size, it means these files are corrupted too and the file name is lost. (Go on to next step)
      1. If you think the download is actually a video, and the .part file is not 0 KB, you can try to open the .part file with VLC PLAYER.
      2. You might be able to see some parts of the video as VLC scans/plays through the video (From this, you can try to guess the file that you lost)
    • This means that you can recover the file (Please view here for more info on recovery)
